NHK announced a 26-episode animated series based on Canadian author Lucy Maud's Emily Starr series of novels. The series, titled Kaze no Shoujo Emily ~ Emily of New Moon ~ will premiere on Japanese television in April, 2007.
The Kyoto International Manga Museum opened on November 25. Currently, the museum is Japan's largest archival of manga material, with 200,000 items within the institute's walls.
TMS Entertainment is currently building a new animation studio in Nakano, Tokyo. The studio, which will have an area of roughly 396 square metres, and cost 600 million yen to build, is planned to finish construction in February 2007. TMS is best known for its work on Lupin III.
Anime News Service reports that WOWOW announced an animated adaptation of Yasuo Otagaki's Midnight Mile manga. The series is scheduled to premiere on Japanse television in March 2007.
Yoyogi Live Animation filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo District Court on December 6. The corporation's child company, Yoyogi Animation Gakuin, is Japan's largest anime specialty school. The company's debts are estimated at 2.2 billion yen ($19 million US dollars). Reasons given for the company's bankruptcy include increased competition from other educational institutions and the falling birthrate of Japan.
